Parley pro, the company line, and a theory of coolness

Irony. I found it tonight. The Student Senate of the Student Association of the University of Tulsa officially made a mistake. For the position of parliamentarian they voted me, someone who despises parliamentary procedure. I loathe the intricacies of parley pro. [Gollum voice] I hatesssss it. [/Gollum voice].

On the flip side, that means that I’m one of the more experienced and respected senators. I speak up for who I think should be president pro tempore, and she wins thanks to my recommendation of her. Yay, this means I’m going to have to talk a lot. I sure hope they like the bitter taste of my words.

The first edition of this Tulsa’s school newspaper, the Collegian, came out today. I’m quite surprised that I know over half of the staff, but maybe that’s just because I’m now an upperclassmen. This year we have a huge freshman class, perhaps the largest ever in Tulsa’s history (it’s around 675, which is smaller than many high school graduating classes, but we’re talking relatively for us). They’ve had to stick people in student lounges and the visitors’ center. The paper also had its usual run of overly liberal and conservative opinion articles as well as TU sports articles.

Having served as an orientation leader, my good-natured roommate gave the company line in the orientation feature. I quote, “Orientation has a new and very competent leader in Laura Smith.” What else can he say about his boss? Oh, and on orientation he says, “I believe this program and the relationships it produces, not only among incoming freshmen but also between incoming freshmen and the upperclassmen orientation leaders, is the single most important determinant as to whether TU retains the freshman students that it attracts here.” He knows what’s up.

For today’s update, I got permission from my scheming roommate to print his theory of coolness.

Howard Vernon’s Theory of Coolness: A cool person is someone who is confident in his or her uniqueness, yet also humble.

Everyone has his or her own definition of “coolness”, but I wholly agree with Howard. Allow me to expand upon his theory.

The first part emphasizes the fact that a cool person oozes with confidence. There’s an aura about them that lets you know that they know what they are doing. Sometimes, they might have no idea what they’re doing, but you certainly don’t know that. They’re secure in themselves and in others. Cool people can even hold a quiet confidence about themselves.

The second part stresses the fact that a cool person exudes unique qualities. I think this means that they don’t let other people’s opinions affect their choices or actions. Sure, these people might care about appearances and such, but I’m talking about lifestyle. I know a lot of cool people who not only believe in God but also in His Word. I believe it’s safe to say that doing so takes courage in this day and age. I know what you’re thinking, and you’re thinking that quite a few people lead a Biblical lifestyle. Yes, but recall from the first part that they are granted uniqueness by their own confidence in it.

The third part underscores the fact that a cool person acts humbly. Plenty of people have the first two qualities, but they sorely lack the third. Instead of allowing others to boast of their awesomeness, so many cool people come off as arrogant. It’s like when you ask a kind person if they are kind. A truly kind person never says they are a kind person. Instead, they’re apt to say that they aren’t that kind at all. I wanted to phrase Howard’s theory “A cool person is a confident, unique, and humble person”. But since a cool person was saying it, the way I phrased it couldn’t have come from a cool person. His way did.

As for myself, I assure you that I am a cool and kind person.
