I voted on American Idol.

I've never really been interested in the AI ratings monster, but my sister is a big fan of the show so it gives me something to talk about. And just to make things interesting, I decided to make an outrageous wager with her.

If the phenom that is Sanjaya Malakar makes it into the Top 3, then she has to buy me Sanjaya's first CD. If he doesn't, I'll buy her the first CD of her choice (most likely Blake Lewis).

And no, I'm probably not going to actually listen to the CD. I'd just want it for the sheer ludicrousness of it, a perfect example of a perfect storm of popularity. Plus it'd be really painful for my sister.

I've even had the free time to analyze this off-the-cuff wager. Phil and Haley can't outlast the Sanjaya phenom. That would give a final six of Lakisha, Melinda, Jordin, Chris, Blake, and Sanjaya.

The girls are sort of similar so I would surmise that one of them would be cut before Sanjaya, most likely Lakisha. Same sort of reasoning for Chris and Blake.

Then even I admit that the backlash against Sanjaya would be so great as to prevent him from advancing into the Top 3. But, eh, it's so ridiculous that it would be awesome to win this wager.

I'm not even in the country and I know who this guy is. Granted, I work in TV news and have seen tons of video of him, but still. He's clealy worked up a media storm and huge public following in the U.S. That's star power. More power to him!

Out of all the singers in the Top 12, I actually think he has the most charisma. He stands out, and even if his voice is a little thin, with the magic of studio work millions of teen girls will buy his albums. I didn't believe this at first until I realized he wasn't even in the bottom three last week. If he has that many votes, it can't just be all the people "voting for the worst".

I wonder, though, is it really a matter of "voting for the best/worst" or voting for the star?
Look at modern pop culture - talent's really not the major source of popularity!

Unfortunately, since they don't release the vote totals, we'll never know.
