I haven’t had time to write up the other half of the confident pessimist story, so enjoy this digression in the meantime.

At most conferences, people promise to stay in touch but never do. There are a variety of reasons, but the most common I believe is that you just don’t interact with those people on a daily basis. So it’s hard to keep in contact, and the Dai Hoi that I attended was no different.

Adopting a common measure in response to this problem, the Vietnamese youth group Thanh Thieu Nien Da Hieu (TTNDH) created a yahoo group. In fact, it created a group after last year’s conference, although that wasn’t a Dai Hoi (sadly, there are subtle distinctions in describing conferences in Vietnamese that even I’m not sure about). We discuss a wide range of topics, dealing with both serious and comical issues.

In a joke to Chi Thu (anime explanation lady says that chi is a Vietnamese honorific referring to an older sister, though this person is certainly no blood relation to Daniel), I asked her to be my matchmaker. Let me share with you some of the fun I have on there.

Duy is the Vietnamese name I chose to use for this group. Both my American and Vietnamese start with the letter “d”, though each “d” is pronounced differently. In fact, Duy is more of a “youwee” (although you have to say it fast to make it sound correct) than the “dee” that I surmise most of readers have been trying to pronounce it as.

Anh Nghi (anime explanation lady says that anh is a Vietnamese honorific referring to an older sister, though this person is certainly no blood relation to Daniel) is a random Beantowner who is getting married this summer.

On to the hilariousness of my dream girl. If you’re going to fantasize, you might as well go into detail.

Chi Thu,

Funny that you should say it's my job to find a wife. I just read
the story of the Romans and the Sabine women.

*Looks around*
Okay, I'll let you guys in on a secret. But don't tell my parents...

Qualities that Duy is looking for in a girl:
She has to be Vietnamese (duh).
She has to be an optimist (to counteract the pessimist in me).
She has to be a good cook (Duy needs to eat).
She has to be no more than two years older or younger than me (I
might make an exception here).
She has to have meaningful conversations with me (although, King
Henry VIII of Britain said to marry stupid if you want to be happy).
She has to have insight into people (because I'm a naive person).
She has to teach me Vietnamese (I do need to learn).
She has to put up with my quirky habits (and I have plenty of them).
She has to accept who I am (second most important thing).
She has to be damn fine (excuse my language on the most important).

One or two of those may be false. I leave it to Chi Thu's insight
to figure out which ones they are.

Hmmm, I can hear Anh Nghi's laughter from here. I know what he's
thinking...Anh Nghi never thought that much about who he would end
up with. He's thinking I'm going to be in for a rude awakening.

Fine by me. I do a lot of thinking, too much for my own good. But
dang it, I'm going to spending the rest of my life with this woman.
Shouldn't I be finicky about this?

A big bonus if she's Christian, due to my Bible Belt upbringing.
The Brimstone Baptist in me will convert her over if she isn't,
though.

Oh, I guess I should tell you a little more about myself, something
that I haven't told you in my writing yet. I'm twenty years old,
two years from graduating with a dual major in electrical
engineering and history. My career goal is to become a professor.
Sure, it doesn't pay as much, but it pays to teach the next
generation. I know I would be really bored in the corporate world.

Somehow, I think I already scared off most of the potential suitors,
Chi Thu.

-Duy
