You can test eggs by putting them in cold water that is about an inch or so deeper than the longest dimension of the egg.

A fresh egg will lay down on the bottom. Fresh eggs are best for poaching and frying. If the egg stands up on end, it is still good for baking, scrambling, or hard-boiling. If the egg floats, it is bad.

Eggs will usually still be good for some time after the "best before" date.
