Everyone edits. You edit in your journal, yes, but you also edit in your life. I am less of a geek at work than I am when I'm with my geek friends. I am less still at school. Everyone adjusts to their social situation - not to do so would be sociopathic.
That being said, the good friends I've made online have been consistently the same person when I meet them in real life. I think you can learn a lot about who a person is by reading their blogs. Some are clearly nuts, after all, or shallow, or very impressed with themselves. That generally tells you a lot about who the person really is. For the most part, peope aren't creating entire fictional versions of themselves - they write about their lives, and you get to know a lot of their backstory.
