I went to a dance in seventh grade. Nobody went to them as couples, so I went with a couple of my buddies. When it was time to leave, my friend Pat's older sister came to pick us up. When she got there, Pat jumped up on the hood of the car, dropped his pants, and mooned his sister and her friend who was with her. Then he sat on the windshield and let loose with a huge fart. It steamed the windshield and sounded like a lawnmower not quite starting up. Pat's sister and her friend were laughing so hard they could barely talk. They said his buttcheeks shook when he farted.

Yeah, it was juvenile, but hey... We were juveniles.

Anyway, Pat's sister was diagnosed with MS shortly after that, and I don't remember her ever being happy after the diagnosis. So aside from it being an amusing (if off-color) story, it's an important memory for me.

I've had other people recoil in horror when I dance. I've had small children scream in fear. I've had people ask if I was having a seizure. But you know what? I like how I dance.

Just don't get too near. The flailing limbs can be dangerous.

It's times like these that I'm glad Baptists don't allow dancing.

My favorite dance memory

When I was in my first year of college, on Halloween one of the dorms put on what they called the 'Geeks and Freaks ball'. It was basically a halloween costume ball where people were encouraged to be a little bit over the top. Sam and I went as dark fae, me in a short black dress with strips of lace tacked on and black gossamer wings and him in a dark suit with a dark purple jacket, both of us in heavy gothed out makeup and glitter in our hair. We both looked -amazing-.

The party didn't pick up 'till the DJ played a couple of swing songs to get people dancing, but then it started getting wild. One woman came dressed as an angel and one came dressed as a demon, and while they didn't seem to know each other coming in, they were -real- familiar with each other before the end of the evening. (I should add here that I went to an all-women's college near San Fransisco, so there was a lot of lesbianism and bisexuality on my campus.)

But what really makes the memory amazing is this: Over the course of the evening, people started, I don't know why, treating Sam and I like royalty. They offered us free drinks. They fawned all over us. Total strangers, more than a little bit drunk, who wanted nothing more than to be near us. As the evening wore on, I started to FEEL like Titania overseeing my court of fae. The halloween costumes only made the impression stronger.

At one point, Sam and I ducked into a side room where there was a bit of food to relax for a moment, and when we came out, the DJ stopped the song he was playing and put on the Cure's 'Lovesong'. ("However far away, I will always love you", etc) Sam and I moved onto the dance floor and started dancing together, and although the floor was packed, people moved away from us, giving us plenty of space to dance in an empty ring surrounded by our subjects. It was one of the most magical, romantic moments I've ever experienced.

I went to a Debutante Ball and the Philadelphia Armory years ago for New Years. It was a fantastic time. I was one of the few people who knew how to swing dance. I danced with all the Debs and their mothers and was quite the hit.
