1. People who act stupid.
When I worked at a movie theater, the stupidity of people never ceased to amaze me.

Lady: Hi, I’d like a ticket to [insert popular movie opening today].
D2: I’m sorry, I’m afraid we’re sold out. Would you like a ticket to a different movie?
Lady: Are you sure you can’t sell me one ticket?
D2: Sorry, I’m afraid the computer won’t allow me to sell a ticket to a move that has sold out.
Lady: Just go ahead and sell me a ticket and I’ll sit on the stairs.
D2: …

Teen: I’d like two tickets to American Pie.
D2: Sure, can I see your ID?
Teen: Okay. Here it is.
D2: So you’re only 17?
Teen: Yes.
D2: You’re only allowed to buy one ticket to a rated R movie when you are 17. You must be at least 18 years old to buy two or more tickets.
Teen: Alright, here’s my girlfriend’s ID.
D2: Hmmm, she’s only 16.
Gf: I’m only three days away from turning 17!
D2: Sorry, I cannot sell you the ticket.
Gf: Why not?
D2: If you have a problem, you can speak to my manager who is standing right behind me.

Teen: Um, what are you doing standing in front of the theater to American Pie?
D2: I’m here because my manager wants me to check the IDs of people going into the movie theater. Could I see yours?
Teen: Uh, I left mine in my car.
D2: Well then, I’m sure it’s not a long walk back to get it for you and your girlfriend.
Teen: Yeah, I’ll be right back.
[Random teen and his gf don’t come back.]

2. Going to see a movie in a movie theater.
This is related to pet peeve number one. I honestly do not like going to the movie theater because I was mentally scarred from working at the movie theater. Those bad memories are written down in one of my paper journals. I prefer not to mention them too often.

3. People who do not reply to important emails.
This applies to group projects and such. I hate group projects because too often I’ve had that one person who simply cannot be found or contacted when you need him. So annoying.

4. Repeating the same point in an argument, but LOUDER.
I quickly learned to hate my student senate for this reason. We would waste at least half an hour because some people would love to say the same thing over and over. Just because you say your point louder doesn’t make you are any more right.

5. People who hide their true thoughts and opinions.
They say that you often hate the things about yourself. I prefer to guard my true thoughts and opinions because I honestly don’t think most people can handle them.

6. Long, boring lectures.
Actually, I’m not so sure if this is a pet peeve as I sleep through most of them. But I’ll list it to be on the safe side.

7. People who say “I have a secret, but I can’t tell you.”
The same principle applies to somebody who laughs out loud but then doesn’t tell you what they are laughing about. I’d tell you why I hate these kinds of people, but I couldn't tell you.

4. Repeating the same point in an argument, but LOUDER.

My father does conflict management for a living, and he deals with this problem a lot. He tells me that the reason people do this is because they think that because you don't agree with them, you obviously don't understand their point because you're not listening. So they keep repeating themselves and repeating themselves, confusing disagreement for being ignored. Of course, the more they repeat themselves, the more they actually -are- ignored, the more frustrated they get, the more they repeat themselves, the more frustrated everyone -else- gets, and so on.

The way to derail this is to stop everything when someone starts acting this way, give them your full attention, and start out by restating their point in your own words in a way that makes it clear that you understand it. ("So what you're saying is that the added funds the school would get from the soda machines is more important, overall, than the obesity that it would encourage because students should have the power to make their own health choices? Is that right?") Get them to confirm that you've got their point right, and if you don't, keep working it out until they can see that you understand. Then calmly explain why you disagree: ("The trouble that I see with this is that even for adults, such a temptation is difficult to ignore, and I feel that morally, a school has an obligation to promote the health of its students over earning extra money.") Then, if possible, give them some encouragement that you're willing to at least entertain their ideas. ("But you know, I could be wrong. How about this. Why don't you track down some hard data on the impact of soda machines in schools, both in terms of profit and school obesity. Also, see if there have been any studies on vending machines that are stocked with milk, juice, and bottled water. That might be a good compromise.")

It sounds like this takes an obscene amount of time to deal with someone who's being a bit neurotic and selfish, but I've tried it before, and overall I think it actually saves time, because you don't spend thirty minutes trying to shout some idiot down. Also, it saves hair that would have otherwise been torn out in frustration.

I already tried this. It only encouraged the loudmouths in my student senate to talk even more. :(

Loudmouths is a totally different problem, and one that's harder to handle, especially with teenagers.

Or college age know-it-alls who like hearing themselves talk. A lot.

Well, a lot of college students, especially in the first two years, really don't leave the highschool mentality behind. I didn't start interacting with people who I considered to be mature regularly until I started taking upper division courses.

There's a great book called something like 'Making meetings work' that talks about how to deal with people who are obstructive in meetings. Back when I was storytelling and narrating in LARP, I read it, and it helped me deal with narrator meetings and mass challanges in game a lot more smoothly.

I'm mentally scarred from working at a grocery store. I hope this doesn't keep me from buying food in the future...

Well, you'll go to buy food, but you just won't like it. Just like I don't like it when all of my friends drag me out to go see a movie.

I don't like going to the movie theater because I don't like to have to put up with the other movie-goers.

And my sound system at home is better than the ones in some of the theaters I've had to sit in :-)

As much as people might loathe their jobs, I for one am grateful for those that quiet down noisy bunches of immature folk in theaters when I am trying to enjoy the movie.

Personally, the theater is my favorite way to watch a movie, so I hope to fight the good fight!

Also, that nickname coming along at all?

Nickname is coming soon, but not before Thursday at the soonest. I'm slightly behind due to the fact that I spent from 2pm to 4am doing layout for the Collegian yesterday. Ask Austin about the pain of stupid programs...

Ugh, I agree with most of those.

I've worked in a movie theater too, and it's amazing how stupid people can be. Like one time someone came in and asked a ticket for a movie we didn't play ( small, independent alternative theater, oh joy ) so he asked "if we were sure?" or plenty of people you explained three times you'll call when they can go in the theatre yet they still insist on ruining the climax of another movie by loudly entering the room ANYWAY ( I once had to disciplin a bunch of teenage, tipsy guys - didn't hear them anymore afterwards ) ...

And the rest, ditto.

Man: The paper said you had the movie!
D2: [Pulls out the newspaper listing] I'm sorry, but the paper says that it's actually no longer playing here.
Man: That was rude! Let me talk to your manager!

[Man talks with manager. Storms out.]

D2: I'm sorry, sir.
Manager: You don't need to be apologize for handling stupid jerks.

Oh yeah. We've had that one pulled on us before too, when people came in with last week's paper and all that crap ( we frequently changed movies ). Or people who were upset cause we only play a movie once a day ( as there's 3 or 4 seances with different movies every time )

I once had to call the projectionist ( who is also some kind of manager there ) about a woman who was flirting with everyone at the bar, being very upset about her relationship with her son after seeing a movie about incest, and she was telling everyone how her son's friends wanted to bang her so badly and all that. I swear.

I'd punch people who do #7 if they weren't my friends.
