The coming tide

My electronics class met with the professor today to have a review session for the test tomorrow. More than half of us (including me) had no idea what was going on.
The thing is that it doesn't look that hard. The problem is that he doesn't want "magic" answers, he actually wants us to use engineering terms to describe how we come up with solutions. So now I have to go and read up on forward biasing and reverse biasing diodes (fancy ways of saying the diode is on and the diode is off).
I'm a sheep being led to the slaughter.
