I think the idea that doctors do really well is a bit of a myth, really. My grandpa was a surgeon before he retired, and for as long as I've known him he's been quite well off, but there's ten years of medical school and a lot of student debt to pay off, and then residency where the hours are shit and so's the pay.. so in your 20s and 30s you're not really raking it in, and I think he's done well mainly becase he's quite a shrewed investor, rather than becase doctors make the big bucks.
