Hump Day Notes

Administration: I'll have a decent thought provoking essay tomorrow, and that'll be it for the July 4th weekend. Between work, family and friends I'll be busy in the analog world. Probably the usual quota of linkdumping, though.

Kawaii Not: A classmate showed me the webcomic KawaiiNot. A decently funny comic, and good stress reliever.

Wimbledon: The Williams sisters seem destined for a final showdown. I think Venus will win it as her game plays better on grass than Serena's game. They should win another doubles championship as well. Can Murray do what Nadal did and overcome Federer?

U.S. Soccer: A disappointing but expected result. However, I don't think we're due for a resurgence (or maybe just surgence). Once other teams break down our adjustments on video, they'll be prepared for the American strategies by the next go around. Also, our defense is just not good enough to advance far in the tournament.

Tampa Bay Rays: The most athletic team in the major leagues is surging. I think the Yankees will be left out as one of their starters is due for an injury.

Pittsburgh Pirates: We just traded away two-thirds of our Opening Day outfield in a month. Might as spin the wheels when you're going for your 17th consecutive losing season.

Finals: Pwnd.

Yep, I am a Pirates fan. I think I told this story a long time ago, but my uncle went to Carnegie Mellon for his Ph.D in engineering and sent me a bunch of Steelers, Pirates and Penguins gear in the early 1990's. Since Arkansas doesn't have a major pro sports franchise, I started following the Pittsburgh pro teams.

At least the Pirates play in PNC Park, perhaps the best ballpark in all of the major leagues!

I grew up a Steelers fan, and with my boyfriend being a hockey fan, and me trying to understand hockey, I naturally became a Penguins fan, but I've never been into baseball, and I don't like the way the MLB is run, especially the way they treat their small market teams. The Yankees infield earns more than an entire Pirates game's tickets times three. The NFL and NHL help the smaller market teams stay competitive which makes for better sport for fans. In the MLB that's just not the case.

I need some Pittsburgh icons.

What I find amusing is that the Florida Marlins, a team most people decry for constantly trading away players, does better than half the other teams in MLB. The Pirates are starting to follow that model, for better or for worse. Andrew McCutcheon looks to be a keeper at center field.

What MLB really needs is a draft slotting system similar to the NBA. The teams that most need the best talent can't get them because agents like Boras are pricing them out of their range.

As far as Pittsburgh icons go, I'm sure you can pilfer some from the official sites. =)
