Well, I loved the books when I was younger...and I keep meaning to see LOTR, and it just hasn't happened.
With Titanic, I kept meaning to see it...and just never did. Then, I got so sick and tired of people telling me that I HAD to see it, I rebelled. For a long time I liked being the only person that I knew that hadn't seen it. :)
I used to do costuming for the theatre for a living, and so all of my friends in that group keep telling me that I need to see it Titanic because of that.
As for LOTR...I think we are going to do exactly what greybeta is doing...and have a bunch of people over for an extended viewing. I can't imagine that we will get through all of them in one sitting, though!!!
Just make sure that they know not to ruin any parts of the movie. There are a few parts that differ from the novels enough to be interesting, and they may as well come as a surprise to you the first time you see it.
