While parents may instill the basics of life through example and instruction (and not all parents teach their children to read, remember), there comes a point when some parents just shrug their shoulders and say things like "find out yourself."

If the phrase had included the word "good" before parents, I would completely agree with you. However, I have known many people that had to learn about life themselves, and sometimes having someone to help you up that slippery slope, be it an online sensei or someone face to face, can be better than going it on your own.

I dunno, it seems like letting someone lay all the tough groundwork, and then say that someone else teaches you more about life because he makes a few good posts is a cop out ;)

Of course, all parents, just like all online senseis, are not created equal.

Actually the cop out would be saying that you don't know which has more value...the teachings of your parents or the teachings of your sensei.
