TU Cent Thoughts, 2-18-06
Feb. 18th, 2006 10:20 amThe return of Samurai Maph
The man is an enigma. He returns from Iraq for a week and he's already picked himself up a nice church girl. Seems to have met her at the bank and got her AIM screenname somehow. Amazing, absolutely amazing! (Samurai Maph went to prom stag even though there was a cute girl hanging all over him, practically begging him to take her out to prom...)
Why yes, I am a good writer
In her critique of this week's issue of my campus newspaper, our advisor (who works for the Tulsa newspaper) go to my piece and laughed and said I could have used more facts but that the last three paragraphs hit "Bam! Bam! bam!" and she had to read until the end. Heh, I learned from the best. Domi arigato, Ferrett-sensei.
Laramie Project
I watched the TU's production of The Laramie Project, a play about the Matthew Shepard story. Very powerful, though a bit long in some parts. They did a good job of nailing the Baptist minister and Fred Phelps, though. I believe the key line in the play was that this story was more than just gay hatred, but hatred in general. What kind of influences lead to such hatred?
The hinted answer: Language itself. As long as "fags" and "dikes" and the idea that "homosexuality is wrong" pervades our society, there will inevitably more Shepard stories. Even the smallest form of violence is violence. So the play posits.
Verse of the Day
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
~Galatians 5:22-23
Convos of the Day
White Mage: Would I lie to you?
Fighter: Yes.
Grasshopper: You're a metrosexual!
PC: No, I'm not!
Grasshopper: Your shirt was designed by METRO designs.
PC: That doesn't make me metro.
Maph: Why do you do it?
D2: Because I'm a nice guy.
Random: Noooo, I can't believe that!
Riest: Yeah, everybody does something to get something in return.
D2: I know I'm among my closest friends when I can't lie.
Rich: So, on this editorial, do you want your readers laugh or cry?
D2: I want them to laugh and cry.
Mike: Hey, that's my seventeen cent coke!
D2: Hmmm, may I remind you that I was the one who bought it?
Mike: I'll bow to that superior logic.
Quote of the Day
"Republicans, you control the presidency, both houses of Congress, and the Supreme Court. It's okay, you can admit you're in control. You're the empire!"
~Jon Stewart on the RNC's "Darth Nancy and the EVIL Democratic empire"
Link of the Day
Mac OS users beware. It was inevitable that hackers focus their attention on Apple.
Sports Report
That was a huge comeback win for Roy Williams and UNC over Georgia Tech. They were down twenty points at one point in the game!
Weather Report
First big snow to stick in Tulsa this year. Unfortunately, this came on a weekend when the Blue Hen's mother was supposed to fly in from Delaware to visit her. Looks like Old Man Winter put those plans on hold. :(
Dusting off old songs
So, I was invited to this art/coffee house thing where people display their artistic, poetic, or musical abilities. I really wanted to play Aeris's Theme from Final Fantasy VII on the piano, but I just didn't have time to get it down. Instead, I'll be going with an old song, "Where Do I Begin?", the Academy Award winning theme from the 1970 movie Love Story. Hopefully I won't screw up too badly.
It was an accident
Yes, Cheney shot the man by accident. Thank you. Can we move back to real coverage please?
Cooking question
Does anyone have any advice on making sopapillas?
