At the BSU, we have an intern who is training for ministry. The intern assists our director in the operations of the BSU. The announcement of the next intern was a bit of a surprise, for it was a female who was selected. In fact, she will be the first female intern that the BSU will have. Oh, I guess that wouldn't be such a big deal until you consider the rather conservative nature of the Southern Baptist Convention. Women clergy are sort of frowned upon. Something about men being the leaders or something like that.

I could care less because she's going to do a great job. She's got the right spiritual gifts for it, despite the fact that she obsesses over Napoleon Dynamite.

I know they were a lot of people they were considering, but the group of guys who I do the Masterlife Bible study with all have a certain weakness that would prevent us from doing the job at its optimal capacity. Personally, I'm not sure if I would have the tim, for I may be heavily involved in my student government next year. The Z3 obsessed guy would be holding down a MIS internship for an oil company. One of the guys is an equipment manager for the football team so that would take up a significant amount of time. Another guy needs more time to grow into leadership roles and the responsibilities that go with being a leader. The last guy isn't quite as outgoing as you'd like in an intern who has to develop relationships with many different kinds of people.

Plus, she has the added disadvantage of being a year behind my class. Normally, the intern is a senior and therefore commands a certain amount of respect from his or her peers. I think it will naturally take some time for the seniors to accept leadership from a junior. The expectations I believe will be much higher than normal, so I'll be praying for her success.

If you were wondering, one of the girls from this funny story will be the next intern (aka Pirate Girl for talking that day up way too much). It's always the ones you least suspect.

Is she maybe not in the SBC but one of the other conventions? Or are you surprised that she's studying for the ministry but about the internship?

It sounds like you have a good group there.

I wouldn't know about the convention thing, although I would say that the BSU doesn't follow word for word the SBC. At first, I was surprised that she was picked as the intern since we never had one before. But it made more sense the more I thought about it.

Yah, we've got a neat group. :)

The American Baptist Church (the mainline Baptist convention in the Northeast and West Coast) has been ordaining women for decades. If the SBC were to start ordaining women it would be a tremendous stride towards ecumenism. Start the movement, guys! (Sorry, the liberal Episcopalian in me just had to say something).
