One New Years I didn't have a party to go to, so I threw on Bush's 'The Chemicals Between Us', lit a whole bunch of candles and rested. Later on, I blew out the candles and went to bed around 10 o' clock. It wasn't very exciting but it was one of the most relaxing evenings that I had enjoyed that year.

I believe there's a lesson to be learned from this.

*nod* Sometimes people just need to rest. And in our society which is so focused on hyper-productivity, we forget this.

Last year was I think my favorite New Years ever. We had a huge LAN party/get together and played games into the night. Some people stayed over for something like two days, hardly getting any sleep, playing computer games and hanging out and generally having a good time. It was wonderful.

This year is gonna suck, since we're moving on the 2nd. I have high hopes for the year to come, but I really have no way of knowing what will happen. My whole life is going to be completely changing this year, which is scary and exciting at the same time, and I have absolutely no idea where I'll end up.

LAN parties can be rather wild things, much less a new year's one. :)

They tend to be tamer in my household, largely because neither Sam nor I drink, and we discourage drinking in our house. That, and all of my friends know how much I loathe being around drunk people, even drunk people who I really enjoy spending time with when they're sober.

So the only judgement impairments come from caffiene, sugar, adrenaline, and sleep deprivation, which tends to keep thinks from getting quite as wild as they otherwise could be. Not that there haven't been some shouting matches, mind.

Thoughts on you, quirks of mine

Well, since this was the poll that got me on your friends list, I thought to reply with my thoughts on you here.

I admire your scholastic acheivements and goals regarding the education of others.

I should also state I respect your spiritual leanings. I may be a chaotic evil, but I can highly respect the lawful good. It takes all kinds to make the world - better more of you, and less of me.

My etiquette: I treat others with respect, whether or not I agree. I enjoy questions, learning, getting to the truth, and exploring ideas for the hell of it. I really look forward to helping you in your quest for a better journal. Maybe you could lend me a hand too.

"1. Link stuff." - Okay. You rock. *thumbs up* I adore learning and teaching myself. :D

I use great grammar, but sometimes I make up my own rules. When I comes to using to my writing to communicate the way in which I'm thinking, I may throw in an incomplete sentence, erroneous comma, or the gratuitous passive voice.

But: U wont C me typng like tis!!!

Unless, of course, low comedy is my goal.

"Tell me who you are." Easy peasy.

"Follow my orders" - If I agree and they aren't contradictory to my own whims. I doubt they'll be something to get in a huff about. I like the boldness of the statement though.

Yeah, I'd secretly like to follow the path of the Master Ferret myself, except... I'm not sure an eccentric like myself really wants all that attention. It's a double-edged sword, popularity.

And a note to you: I read posts. I read all of them. While I may have a long list of friends, not a single one of their posts escape my reading at least each day. While I'll choose to stop replying to drama queens, fanatics, or people to whom I've just lost the ability to reply to - I don't stop reading.

And now, I'll go brush up on your past posts.

I used to keep memories, but I've been converting them to tags this past year, so you might want to peruse that as well.

*full curtsey*

A fellow narcissist understands the need to talk about a fellow narcissist. :D

I didn't think chaotic evil people actually existed, but perhaps the balance of nature mandates their existence. But if you're chaotic evil, we will disagree on many things. I will respect your opinions, but never expect me to agree with them.

On etiquette, if you scratch my back, I will scratch yours.

My rules only apply to my journal. I don't expect perfect grammar or for you to link everytime, but when I ask for a link I expect one to appear. Rule number four is the blanket I will delete any behavior I consider unruly. You should know that I'm the benevolent dictator of my own LJ. On your own journal, I am subject to your rules. On mine, I rule with an iron fist.

Wielding double-edged swords is a necessary skill in life. All of our talents can be used for or against us.

I admit that I won't always have time to read all the posts on my friends list. I try, but something called "real life" creeps in. I will skim every post, though I will stop reading once I've decided that I don't have the time or effort to devote to a post.

My recommended posts are my user info and and memories.

Memories are good for a few posts you just want to reference quickly. My user info contains stories like that too, so I figure interested people would just read those in their own time.

I'm too lazy to tag my old posts. But I'll try to remember tagging my new ones.

*does polite Asian bow*

Because I don't believe in objective morality to the extent that one would have to believe in it to have 'good' and 'evil' alignments, I tend to think of 'good' as 'altruistic' and 'evil' as 'selfish'. (And I'm not talking about 'look out for your interests' selfish, I'm talking 'put your desires and whims above the needs and rights of others' selfish). Then neutral becomes just that, neutral, as in leaning neither excessively towards selfishness or altruism, someone who looks after their own interests but is happy to help a friend move, for example.

So written, chaotic evil would be someone who does whatever the hell they want when they want to do it in such a way that their actions are unpredictable (the chaotic part) and whose desires tend strongly towards selfishness (the evil part). I think that you can probably see a glimpse of chaotic evil in the behavior of abusers, both physical and emotional (the way that they will swing, often unpredictably, from abusive to kind to abusive again), and some of the charismatic madmen of history have probably shown chaotic evil tendancies.

Personally, I think that chaotic evil gets over-used in D&D as "the ultimate evil". Sorry, it ain't. Lawful evil is all the more gruesome because it's more calculated and more insidious.

(I think of myself as true neutral leaning towards neutral good. I respect rules and follow them when it's sensible to do so, but I'm not opposed to going my own way when I feel that the established way won't work for me, as it often doesn't. I don't do charity work or donate a lot of money, but I do tend to do a charity project or two a year, and I take great pleasure in dropping everything and helping my friends from time to time.)

Hmmmm, I never thought of the lawful-chaotic balance that way.

Well, to be more clear, it'd be more like the 'good-evil balance of D&D alignment'.

I'm still torn in terms of 'lawful/chaotic'. Someone who obeys the laws of their personal land, for example, might go from lawful to chaotic if they moved to another land where their laws were illegal, assuming they tried to stick by their laws instead of adapting. So is a paladin in an evil country chaotic? It's a fine line. But at the same time, you don't want to determine lawfulness by someone who's most willing to abide by the laws of the particular land where they happen to be, because hardline lawfullness shouldn't be (IMO) so wishy-washy. On the other hand, you could have someone who obeys a rational and internally consistant set of personal laws -- except, that includes storybook robbers and pirates, who live by various theives codes, including the storybook version of Robin Hood, who is universally cited as an example of chaotic good.

This whole debate, BTW, came from a game I played in for a while where the characters were encouranged to be as well-developed as people as possible, and where the GM determined our alignment and our alignment shifted quite a lot during game play. There were plenty of situations where people were extremely surprised to learn that their behavior was giving them an evil alignment, and thus it was important to be clear and logical about what sorts of behaviors would cause what sorts of alignment shifts.

The game was fun, and it was really cool to watch people who'd started out intending to tell a heroic story wind up telling a tragedy once they had it pointed out to them that their characters were, with all the best intentions, sliding steadily towards evil. One by one, they started embracing it, and by the end of the game, we were pretty much all evil, with the exception of ONE lawful neutral monk who was trying so very hard to save us and who was being steadily dragged down in the process (he'd started out lawful good).
